Passé en ING ING Past Prétérit en ING

Before learning about ING Past, make sure you remember your Simple Past lesson!

 

Simple Past 

 

 

Le Passé en Be + V- ING sert à parler de ce qui était en train de se passer à un moment du passé.

Il donne le cadre d'une action passée : j'étais en train de faire quelque chose quand ceci est arrivé.

 

Il se compose de BE au passé suivi d’un verbe en ING tout comme le Présent en Be + V- ING.

My brother was phoning his wife when he had a car accident. 

 

 

 

L'action au Passé en Be + V- ING (téléphoner à sa femme) avait déjà commencé au moment où l'action au Prétérit (avoir un accident) s'est produite. C'est alors qu'il téléphonait qu'il a eu un accident.

 

Par contre, lorsqu'on parle de deux actions qui se succèdent simplement, on utilise uniquement le Prétérit simple ou Simple Past.

He parked his car and phoned his wife.  

Ici, les deux actions sont successives. L'une a lieu puis la seconde.

Exercise 1: Put the verbs into ING Past if possible.

When the train arrived, …

…the passengers on the platform.   (wait)

Exercise 2: Choose between the 2 propositions and copy the correct one.

When the burglar* (came / was coming) out of the house, Francis and Chloe (walked / were walking) in the street.        * cambrioleur

They (saw / were seeing) him and (started / were starting) shouting! 

While I (drove /was driving) to Cambridge, I (stopped / was stopping) at a petrol station.

They (swam / were swimming) when the rain (started / was starting) .

A man (entered / was entering) the office, while the secretary (phoned / was phoning) .

Exercise 4: Translate the following sentences into English.

Hier soir, ils regardaient la télévision quand leur mère est rentrée.

Lorsque je faisais mes devoirs, mon chat m’a volé ma gomme.

Que faisais-tu à 7h ce matin ? Etais-tu en train de prendre ta douche ?

Hier, j’ai acheté du pain et je suis allée chez le coiffeur. Ensuite, je suis rentrée chez moi.
